Step 2: Final Average Salary (FAS)Average of highest 5 annual salaries (highest 3 if grandfathered as of Aug 31, 2005)
Step 3: Standard Annual AnnuityFinal Average Salary × Total Multiplier % (divided by 12 for monthly benefit)

TRS Texas Membership Tiers (1 through 6) & Partial Lump-Sum Option (PLSO)

Texas Government Code § 824.202 uses the same 2.3% per year multiplier across all TRS tiers, but normal unreduced retirement age depends on when your current membership began and whether you were vested by August 31, 2014. Members who reach a combined Age + Service score of at least 90 can also elect the Partial Lump-Sum Option (PLSO), taking 12, 24, or 36 months of standard annuity payments upfront (eligible for direct rollover to an IRA or 403(b)) in exchange for a permanent actuarial reduction in monthly payments.

TRS Texas Retirement Calculator Worked Example: Rule of 80 & PLSO Lump Sum

A Texas teacher age 58 with 26 years of service (Rule of 80 score = 84) and a top-5 average salary of $66,000 earns a multiplier of 26 × 2.3% = 59.8%. Their unreduced Standard Annuity is 59.8% × $66,000 = $39,468/year ($3,289.00/month). Selecting Option 2 (50% survivor benefit, ~0.94 factor) pays $3,091.66/month for life.

Common questions

What is the formula for TRS Texas retirement?

Multiply your total years of TRS service credit by 2.3%, then multiply that percentage by the average of your highest 5 annual salaries (or highest 3 salaries if you met the 2005 grandfather criteria). Divide the annual total by 12 for your monthly standard annuity.

How does the Rule of 80 work for Texas teachers?

Your age plus your years of TRS service credit must equal or exceed 80 (with at least 5 years of service). Members in Tiers 1–2 qualify for unreduced retirement at any age once they hit 80; Tiers 3–4 must also be at least age 60, and Tiers 5–6 must be at least age 62 for unreduced benefits.

Do Texas teachers receive Social Security in addition to TRS?

Most Texas public school districts do not participate in Social Security for teacher wages, meaning you pay 0% Social Security tax on TRS wages. Furthermore, the federal Social Security Fairness Act repealed the WEP and GPO reductions, so any Social Security benefit you earned from non-TRS jobs or a spouse is no longer reduced by your TRS pension.
