403b plan limits for 2026
- Elective deferrals: $24,500 (IRS).
- Age 50+ catch-up: $8,000; ages 60–63: $11,250 instead, if the plan allows.
- Total from all sources (with employer contributions): $72,000.
The 15-year service catch-up
If your plan allows it and you have at least 15 years of service with the same public school system, hospital, home health or health and welfare agency, church or similar employer, your limit rises by the lesser of $3,000, $15,000 minus the 15-year catch-ups you've already used, or $5,000 × your years of service minus your earlier deferrals with that employer (IRS). It's used before the age 50 catch-up, so someone 50+ might defer up to $35,500.
A 403(b) works like a 401(k) for public schools and nonprofits; many also offer a 457 account, which has its own separate limit.
