Quick SS estimator: how this works
Social Security bases your benefit on your 35 highest years of earnings, indexed for wage growth, averaged into AIME. The 2026 formula gives 90% of the first $1,286 of AIME, 32% of AIME up to $7,749, and 15% above that: your primary insurance amount (PIA), the benefit at full retirement age. The calculator assumes your current earnings, in today's dollars, for the years you enter (zeros for missing years) and up to the 2026 taxable maximum of $184,500, much like SSA's own quick calculator. For your exact figure, enter the benefit from your my Social Security statement.
Example: $65,000 a year for 35 years: AIME $5,417, PIA = 0.9 ร 1,286 + 0.32 ร (5,417 โ 1,286) = $2,479 a month at 67; $1,735 at 62 (70%) and $3,074 at 70 (124%).
Social security age of retirement chart
| Born | Full retirement age | At 62 you get |
|---|---|---|
| 1943โ1954 | 66 | 75% |
| 1955 | 66 and 2 months | 74.2% |
| 1956 | 66 and 4 months | 73.3% |
| 1957 | 66 and 6 months | 72.5% |
| 1958 | 66 and 8 months | 71.7% |
| 1959 | 66 and 10 months | 70.8% |
| 1960 or later | 67 | 70% |
Claiming early cuts the benefit by 5/9 of 1% per month for the first 36 months and 5/12 of 1% after that; waiting past full age adds 8% a year until 70. Benefits rise each year with the COLA (2.8% for 2026). If you work before full retirement age, $1 is withheld for every $2 earned over $24,480 ($65,160 in the year you reach full age, $1 for $3).
How to calculate Social Security break-even
Break-even is the age at which the total from claiming later catches up with claiming earlier. For the example, waiting from 62 to 67 breaks even at about 78.7; waiting from 67 to 70 at about 82.5. If you expect to live past those ages, waiting pays more over your lifetime; married higher earners should also weigh the survivor benefit, which is based on what the higher earner was receiving.
Life expectancy calculator (SSA) and Social Security mortality
SSA's actuaries publish period life tables; their online life expectancy calculator gives an average age by birth date and sex. Use that figure (or your family history) in the "age you plan for" box; the calculator compares lifetime totals at that age. This page doesn't reproduce SSA's tables.
Supplemental security income (SSI income)
SSI is a needs-based federal payment, separate from Social Security retirement, for people 65+, blind or disabled with limited income and assets ($2,000 individual / $3,000 couple). The 2026 federal maximum is $994 a month ($1,491 for a couple). SSA ignores $20 of most income and the first $65 of earnings plus half the rest, then subtracts what's left. With $400 a month of earnings and no other income: (400 โ 20 โ 65) รท 2 = $157.50 counts, so SSI is about $836.50. Many states add a supplement.

The quick SS estimator above follows the same approach as SSA's own quick calculator. For your personal average lifespan, the life expectancy calculator SSA publishes gives an estimate to use in the planning-age box. Supplemental security income SSI payments are covered in the SSI section above.
