How VA Math (38 CFR § 4.25) and the 10% Bilateral Factor Work
The Department of Veterans Affairs does not add disability ratings together using straight addition. Instead, under 38 CFR § 4.25, each rating is applied in descending order to your remaining healthy ("whole person") efficiency: a 50% rating leaves 50% healthy efficiency, a second 30% rating takes 30% of that remaining 50% (+15% = 65% combined), and a third 20% rating takes 20% of the remaining 35% (+7% = 72% exact, which rounds down to the nearest 10% at 70%). If you have compensable disabilities affecting both paired extremities (both knees, both shoulders, or both feet), 38 CFR § 4.26 combines those bilateral ratings first and adds an extra 10% of their combined value before combining other conditions.
VA Disability Calculator Worked Example: Bilateral Factor + Dependents
A veteran has 50%, 30%, and 20% ratings, is married with 1 child under 18, and has no bilateral factor. Combining 50% + 30% = 65%; combining 65% + 20% = 72% exact, which rounds to a 70% official rating. At 70% in 2026, base pay is $1,808.45/month plus $153.00 for a spouse and $113.00 for one child = $2,074.45/month ($24,893/year completely tax-free).
Common questions
How does the VA combine multiple disability ratings?
Sort all ratings from highest to lowest. Start at 100% healthy efficiency, subtract your highest rating, multiply your second rating by the remaining efficiency, round to the nearest whole percent, and repeat. Once all ratings are combined, values ending in 1 to 4 round down to the nearest 10%, and values ending in 5 to 9 round up to the next 10%.
At what VA disability rating do you get extra pay for dependents?
Your combined VA disability rating must be at least 30% to receive additional monthly compensation for a spouse, dependent children, or dependent parents. Dependency add-ons are pro-rated in 10% steps from 30% to 100%.
Is VA disability compensation taxable on federal or state tax returns?
No. Under IRC § 104(a)(4), VA disability compensation is 100% exempt from federal and state income tax and is not reported on your Form 1040.
