What happens at the end of a Motability lease?
At the end of a Motability lease, the normal process is to return the vehicle and choose the next eligible lease if you remain entitled.

Contact Motability before the lease ends and ask whether your vehicle has a purchase option, what the current end-of-lease steps are and what happens to any unused mileage or adaptations.

A three-year lease is not automatically a buy-to-own contract
Motability leases are designed around an accessible vehicle lease rather than a standard hire-purchase arrangement. At the end of the lease, the usual route is to return the vehicle and, where eligible, arrange another lease. The vehicle being three years old does not create a legal right to buy it at a standard discount. Any purchase opportunity is governed by Motability’s current process and the vehicle’s circumstances.
There is no standard “balloon” price
A PCP has an optional final payment stated in the credit agreement. A Motability lease is different. If Motability offers an outgoing vehicle for purchase, the price is not necessarily a published formula based simply on the original price or the remaining book value. Ask for the actual offer and terms rather than estimating a purchase price from online used-car adverts.
Unused mileage is usually not a cash refund
Lease arrangements can include mileage expectations and end-of-lease condition checks. Driving fewer miles than expected does not normally mean the customer receives a simple cash refund for the unused allowance. What matters is returning the vehicle in the required condition and following the lease’s mileage and damage policies. Check the current end-of-lease guidance for your vehicle rather than assuming ordinary car-leasing rules apply.
Vehicle condition and adaptations matter
Before handover, check the tyres, bodywork, interior, service history and any adaptations. If adaptations were arranged through the scheme, follow Motability’s instructions about what happens when the vehicle is returned. Do not pay for unnecessary cosmetic work without checking the scheme’s standards and the likely benefit. Photograph the vehicle at handover if you are concerned about its condition.
EV leases require the same end-of-lease thinking
Electric vehicles do not turn the Motability arrangement into a purchase contract. The practical issues include charging access, mileage needs, range and the suitability of the next vehicle. A vehicle’s residual value can also affect a commercial purchase offer, but you should not assume an EV will have the same end-of-lease opportunity as a petrol or diesel vehicle.
Plan the replacement early
Start before the lease end so that you know whether you will return the vehicle, take another lease or explore a separate purchase. If entitlement to the relevant disability benefit changes, the timing can matter. Keep the lease paperwork and current benefit award information available. Motability can explain programme-specific rules; MoneyHelper can help compare ordinary car finance if you are considering a separate vehicle purchase outside the scheme.
Worked example
Illustrative example: Imagine a Motability customer reaches the end of a three-year lease and likes the existing vehicle. The customer assumes that unused mileage creates a trade-in credit and that the car can be purchased for a standard residual percentage. Neither assumption should be made without a current offer. The customer contacts Motability, confirms the end-of-lease process and asks whether that particular vehicle is available to purchase. The customer also asks what happens to adaptations and whether a replacement lease is available. If the customer instead buys another vehicle outside the scheme, the comparison changes because ordinary PCP or HP finance has different deposit, payment and ownership terms. The example illustrates why “three years” is a lease term, not a guaranteed purchase point.
Can I buy my Motability car after the lease?#
You may sometimes be offered an opportunity to purchase the outgoing vehicle, but it is not a universal right at a fixed price. Motability decides the current end-of-lease options. Contact Motability before the lease ends and ask whether your specific vehicle has a purchase offer and what the terms are.
How long is a Motability lease?#
Many Motability vehicle leases run for three years, although the exact arrangement is shown in your lease paperwork. Do not treat the three-year point as an automatic ownership date. The normal process is to follow the scheme’s end-of-lease instructions and, if eligible, select a replacement vehicle.
Do I get money back for unused Motability mileage?#
Unused mileage is not normally treated like a cash balance that can simply be reclaimed. The scheme has its own mileage and condition rules. If your vehicle has significantly lower mileage than expected, ask Motability how that affects your end-of-lease assessment rather than assuming there is a refund.
Can I keep the car if I do not want a new lease?#
You can return it at the end of the lease, and other options depend on your circumstances and what Motability offers. If you are offered a purchase opportunity, ask for the price and conditions. Do not keep using the vehicle beyond the contractual term without first confirming the permission and insurance position.
What happens to adaptations at lease end?#
Adaptations are dealt with under the Motability scheme’s current process. Tell Motability about any adaptations before the handover and follow its instructions. Do not remove or transfer equipment yourself unless the scheme or installer confirms that this is permitted and explains what happens to the cost or ownership.
Can I switch from Motability to PCP?#
You can consider an ordinary PCP outside the scheme if you are eligible to finance another vehicle, but it is a separate commercial contract. Compare the deposit, monthly payments, mileage, optional final payment and ownership outcome. Also consider how your disability-benefit entitlement and Motability eligibility affect the overall household budget.
Where do I find official Motability end-of-lease rules?#
Use Motability’s own support information and your lease documents. The scheme can explain the current options for returning, renewing or potentially purchasing a vehicle. Avoid relying on forum claims about fixed purchase discounts, unused-mileage refunds or universal buy-out prices because scheme rules and vehicle-specific offers can change.
