How can you spot a misleading PCP compensation claim?
PCP compensation is a real consumer-finance issue, but not every claim advert is trustworthy. Be cautious of unsolicited “guaranteed payout” messages, upfront fees, pressure to sign authority forms or requests for banking credentials.

Check the FCA firm status, read the finance complaint information, and complain to the lender yourself before paying a third party to pursue a PCP claim.
FCA: Motor finance consumer redress schemeThe underlying issue can be genuine
Questions about commission, disclosure and motor-finance treatment can be legitimate, including complaints about the way finance was arranged. That does not mean every online claim service or compensation advert is genuine. Treat the legal or regulatory issue and the marketing company as separate questions. The FCA has published current motor-finance consumer information, including its 2026 redress work, but that does not turn every cold call into a valid claim.
Red flags in claims adverts
Be cautious when an advert says everyone is entitled to a guaranteed amount, demands an upfront “release” fee, asks for your online-banking password, requests a one-time security code or pressures you to sign immediately. Some claims companies may charge a fee or commission even where a complaint could be made directly. Read the contract before signing authority to act on your behalf.
Start with the lender
A financial complaint normally begins with the firm that provided the product. Set out the agreement details, the concern, the dates and what outcome you are seeking. Keep the original finance agreement and any promotional material. If the issue is covered by a formal regulatory redress process, the FCA’s consumer guidance can explain how affected customers are expected to proceed.
Do not pay to unlock a refund
A common scam pattern is a caller saying that a refund has been approved but another payment is needed for tax, insurance or verification. Real complaint processes do not require you to hand over a one-time banking code to prove identity. If a claims company asks for money before it will tell you what service it is providing, stop and verify the business independently.
Check the firm before signing
Search the firm on the FCA Register where it provides regulated financial services, and compare the exact legal name and contact details. A claims-management firm may have different permissions from the finance provider itself. Do not rely on a logo or a Companies House registration alone as proof that the service is authorised for the activity being offered.
Free routes can be enough
The Financial Ombudsman Service is a free route for eligible financial complaints after the firm has had the opportunity to respond. MoneyHelper can also provide general guidance. That means a consumer can often understand the basic process without paying a claims firm simply to send the first complaint. The decision to use a paid representative should be based on genuine added value, not fear of missing out.
Worked example
Illustrative example: Suppose a driver receives a message promising a guaranteed PCP compensation payout and is told to pay a processing fee before the claim can be submitted. The driver first checks whether the finance firm is the lender named on the original agreement and whether the message came from a regulated business. The driver then reads the lender’s own complaints information and sees that a complaint can be made directly. No fee is paid to “unlock” the refund, and the driver does not provide banking passwords or one-time codes. If the complaint needs escalation, the driver can use the appropriate ombudsman or regulatory process. The example shows why the existence of a genuine motor-finance issue does not validate a particular claims advert.
Are PCP compensation claims real?#
Some complaints about motor finance can be genuine, but an advert or claims company is not proof that you are owed money. Check the finance agreement, the lender’s complaint process and current FCA information. Avoid adverts that promise guaranteed payouts or demand sensitive banking information.
Do I need a claims company to get PCP compensation?#
No. You can normally complain to the finance provider yourself, and eligible complaints can be taken to the Financial Ombudsman Service without paying a claims company for the complaint itself. A representative may add value in a complex case, but compare the service and fee before signing authority.
What are common PCP claims-company scam signs?#
Watch for unsolicited contact, guaranteed compensation, pressure to act immediately, requests for upfront “insurance” or release fees and requests for online-banking passwords or security codes. Check the firm independently, read its fee agreement and start with the finance provider’s own complaint route before paying anyone.
What if a PCP claims firm asks for an upfront fee?#
An upfront fee is not automatically proof of fraud, but it is a reason to read the contract closely. Identify exactly what the fee pays for, what happens if the claim fails and whether other charges apply. Verify the firm’s regulatory status and consider making the complaint directly before agreeing to pay.
Can a claims firm guarantee a PCP payout?#
No responsible firm can guarantee the outcome of an individual complaint simply from the fact that the person had PCP finance. The result depends on the agreement, the relevant circumstances and the applicable regulatory process. Treat “guaranteed payout” marketing as a major warning sign and check the FCA’s current information yourself.
What should I do if I paid a fake claims firm?#
Contact your bank immediately if money or banking information was involved and explain that you suspect fraud. Preserve the advert, messages, contract and payment evidence. Report the suspected fraud through the appropriate UK reporting route. Be wary of another firm offering “recovery” for a further upfront fee.
Where can I complain about a PCP finance company?#
Start with the lender or finance provider’s formal complaint process. If the issue remains unresolved and the complaint is eligible, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to consider it. The FCA also publishes information about motor-finance consumer matters. Keep the agreement and a clear chronology of what happened.
