Can a lower PCP APR be used after you have signed?
Usually not automatically. Once a regulated PCP credit agreement is made, the agreed interest rate and payments are normally governed by the signed contract. A lower advertised APR later does not create a general right to receive the new rate.

Ask the finance provider whether your agreement can be withdrawn or replaced and check the signed paperwork before paying any administration or cancellation charge.

The signed agreement controls the rate
A PCP combines a car purchase with a regulated credit agreement. The APR shown in an advertisement is an offer for a particular application, not a floating rate that automatically tracks later adverts. Once your agreement is made, the contractual interest rate and payment structure normally apply. A dealer may voluntarily offer a revised deal, but that is different from having a legal entitlement to a lower APR simply because rates moved before the first payment.
Check whether the agreement has actually been made
People sometimes say they have “signed” when they have only signed an order form or application. Other times the regulated finance agreement has been electronically executed and all parties have completed the required steps. Those details matter. Find the copy of the consumer credit agreement and identify the date it was made. If you have not yet received or completed the finance agreement, tell the dealer you want the lower rate considered before the credit contract is finalised.
The 14-day withdrawal right is different
Regulated consumer-credit agreements can carry a right to withdraw within 14 days in the circumstances covered by the Consumer Credit Act. Withdrawal is not the same as cancelling the car purchase. The finance must generally be repaid within the statutory timetable, and the dealer’s vehicle-sale contract may have its own cancellation provisions. Check both contracts. Do not assume that exercising a credit withdrawal simply leaves you with the car on the same terms without a finance replacement.
Ask for a replacement quote, not an argument about the advert
If the provider is genuinely willing to offer a lower rate, ask for a written revised quote showing the new amount financed, total amount payable and any deposit or fees. Compare the whole contract rather than focusing on APR alone. A lower APR can still accompany a different cash price, optional product, deposit or balloon payment. For PCP, the optional final payment is part of the overall cost and must be considered.
Do not sign twice without checking the consequences
A second finance application can create another credit check and may require unwinding the first agreement. Ask who will cancel the original finance, when the first agreement ends and how any deposit is treated. If the dealer says the new rate is available only if you sign immediately, slow the process down enough to read the documents. Keep the old contract until the new arrangement is confirmed in writing.
When the issue is a misleading rate advert
If the dealer or broker advertised one finance rate but arranged a materially different agreement without a clear explanation, this becomes a conduct or mis-selling question rather than simply a request for a rate match. Keep screenshots of the original advert and the signed documents. Complain to the firm first. If the complaint remains unresolved, the applicable complaint and ombudsman route depends on the firm and agreement.
Worked example
Illustrative example: Suppose a buyer signs a PCP agreement after seeing an advertised APR and then notices the same model promoted at a lower APR. The buyer should first establish whether the finance agreement has actually been made, rather than assuming the earlier signature was only an application. If the regulated agreement is already in force, the original rate normally remains the contractual rate. The buyer can ask the lender whether it is prepared to replace the agreement, but there is no general automatic rate-match right. If the agreement is within the statutory withdrawal period, the buyer should read the withdrawal terms carefully and understand the separate vehicle-sale contract. Only after comparing the replacement agreement’s total cost, deposit, mileage terms and optional final payment should the buyer decide whether changing finance is worthwhile.
Can a car dealer change my PCP APR after signing?#
The dealer can offer a different deal if both sides agree, but it does not automatically have to replace an already-made credit agreement because a lower advert appears later. Check whether the original agreement is legally complete and ask the finance provider for its position in writing before cancelling anything.
Can I cancel a PCP within 14 days?#
A regulated consumer-credit agreement can have a 14-day withdrawal right, subject to the Consumer Credit Act conditions. Withdrawing from the finance is not necessarily the same as cancelling the vehicle purchase. You may have to repay the finance amount and then arrange another payment method. Read both contracts carefully.
Does a lower APR mean my monthly PCP payment must be lower?#
Not necessarily. PCP payments also depend on the cash price, deposit, amount financed, contract term, mileage allowance and optional final payment. When comparing a new offer, compare the total amount payable and major contract terms, not only the headline APR.
Should I ask the lender or the dealer about the rate?#
Ask both when necessary, but the finance provider controls the credit agreement. The dealer can explain the vehicle price and may submit an application, while the lender can confirm whether the signed finance can be changed, withdrawn or replaced. Get any proposed change in writing.
Can a second PCP application hurt my credit file?#
It can create another hard credit inquiry depending on the lender and application process. That is one reason to establish whether the first agreement can be changed before submitting a second full application. Do not repeatedly apply to multiple lenders merely to chase a lower rate.
What if the advertised APR was misleading?#
Keep a copy of the advert and the agreement and complain to the relevant firm. Explain the difference between what was represented and what was actually arranged. If the firm does not resolve the complaint, use the appropriate financial complaints route. The question is then about the sales process and disclosure, not simply a rate match.
Does the PCP balloon payment affect the APR?#
The optional final payment is part of the PCP structure and can materially affect monthly payments and the total amount payable. APR already incorporates the cost of credit under the regulated calculation, but you should still compare the contractual figures directly because the final payment determines whether you return the car, refinance or buy it at the end.
