How does PCP early settlement work?

UKPublished · Written by BuyMeWhiskey Editorial Team · How we check facts

You can normally ask the finance company for an early-settlement figure on a PCP. Paying it ends the finance agreement, but the figure can be different from simply adding the remaining monthly payments because interest and other contract adjustments are handled in the settlement calculation.

Request the written settlement figure, then compare it with the car’s current market value and the cost of alternative borrowing before deciding whether to settle early.

Settlement is not the same as remaining instalments

A PCP has a structured repayment schedule that usually includes an optional final payment. If you want to end the agreement early and own or dispose of the vehicle, ask the finance company for its settlement figure. The lender works out the amount needed to discharge the credit at that point. It can therefore differ from the sum of all scheduled payments left in the original agreement.

Compare the settlement with the car value

The key financial comparison is between what it costs to settle and what the vehicle is worth to you or on the market. If the car is worth more than the settlement, settling may leave you with equity. If the car is worth less, paying the settlement does not automatically create a good deal. Check the vehicle’s actual condition, mileage, market price and any costs associated with selling it.

Early settlement and voluntary termination are different

Voluntary termination under the Consumer Credit Act is a different route from simply requesting an early settlement. On qualifying regulated PCP agreements, the right to terminate can involve reaching the statutory 50% total-amount-payable point, subject to the agreement and condition requirements. Early settlement instead means paying the lender to end the credit. Ask which route you are being quoted because the consequences are not the same.

The agreement’s optional final payment matters

PCP monthly payments are lower partly because a substantial optional final payment is left for the end. That amount is relevant when calculating affordability and the total cost. If you settle early, you are not necessarily paying the same amount that you would have paid by carrying the agreement to the end and then buying the car. The lender’s written settlement figure is the authoritative number.

Check the settlement date

A settlement figure normally has an expiry date. Interest or other contractual amounts can change the figure if payment is made later. Ask how to pay, whether the quoted amount includes all charges needed to close the account and when the lender will confirm that the finance is discharged. Keep the confirmation, especially if you plan to sell or trade the car immediately afterward.

Do the comparison before borrowing to settle

Replacing PCP finance with another loan is not automatically cheaper. Compare the new borrowing’s rate and term with the settlement amount and the cost of keeping the PCP. If the new loan is unsecured, you may also be changing the balance between flexibility and security. MoneyHelper can help with general car-finance comparisons; a regulated adviser is appropriate when the arrangement is unusually complex.

Worked example

Illustrative example: Suppose a PCP customer requests an early-settlement quote for a vehicle that currently appears to be worth more than the quoted settlement amount. The customer does not simply add the remaining monthly payments. Instead, the customer uses the finance company’s written settlement figure and checks the vehicle’s actual market value, condition and likely selling costs. If the customer decides to settle using another loan, the customer compares the new loan’s total cost with the cost of leaving the PCP in place. The customer also checks whether voluntary termination is a separate option under the contract. The example shows why a settlement decision is a vehicle-value and finance-cost comparison, not just a question of whether early repayment “sounds cheaper”. The figures and assumptions in this illustration should be replaced with the reader’s own contract terms, dates and inputs before making a real financial decision.

How do I get an early settlement figure on PCP?#

Contact the finance company and request a written settlement quotation. It should tell you the amount required and any date by which the figure is valid. Do not calculate it only by adding the remaining monthly payments. Keep the lender’s confirmation because you may need proof that the agreement has been discharged after payment.

Is early settlement on PCP free?#

The lender calculates the settlement under the credit agreement and applicable consumer-credit rules. The amount can include the remaining capital and other permitted amounts, with the credit cost adjusted according to the law. Ask the lender for the full written figure and any explanation of charges rather than assuming early settlement is always penalty-free or always expensive.

What is the 50% PCP rule?#

Qualifying regulated PCP agreements can have a statutory voluntary-termination route linked to 50% of the total amount payable, subject to the agreement and condition requirements. This is different from early settlement. Check the contract for the exact figure and ask the finance provider to show what you have paid toward the relevant amount before relying on the rule.

Can I sell a PCP car before settling the finance?#

The finance provider normally retains rights in the vehicle until the agreement is dealt with, so you should not sell it as if you own it outright. Get the settlement figure and confirm the process for paying the lender from the sale proceeds. The buyer, dealer and finance company may need to coordinate the transaction.

Is it better to settle PCP early or keep it?#

Compare the settlement figure with the car’s market value, the remaining cost of the PCP, your cash needs and any alternative borrowing. If the car has strong equity, settlement can be attractive. If there is negative equity or the cash is needed elsewhere, keeping the contract may be more sensible.

Does PCP settlement improve my credit score?#

Settling a credit agreement can change your credit file, but it is not a simple score-boosting strategy. Credit scores use multiple factors, and paying off one account does not guarantee a particular score movement. Make the decision based on the finance cost and your needs, then check that the lender correctly reports the account as settled.

What should I keep after PCP settlement?#

Keep the settlement quote, proof of payment and the finance company’s confirmation that the agreement is closed. If the car is being sold, keep evidence that any security interest has been released or that the dealer handled the settlement. Check your credit report later if the account status matters for a new application.
