What Form 8962 does
Form 8962 reconciles the premium tax credit for marketplace health insurance. During the year the credit is paid in advance to your insurer based on the income you estimated; on your return you work out the credit you actually qualify for with your real income, using the amounts on Form 1095-A. If the advance was too big you repay the difference; if it was too small you get the rest.
The lines that decide your credit (2026)
- Line 4: the federal poverty line for your tax family. For 2026 coverage it's the 2025 guideline: $15,650 for one plus $5,500 per extra person in the 48 states ($19,550 + $6,880 in Alaska, $17,990 + $6,330 in Hawaii).
- Line 5: household income as a percentage of that line. From 2026 you must be between 100% and 400%: the temporary expansion that removed the 400% limit ended in 2025.
- Line 7: the applicable figure from the 2026 table (Rev. Proc. 2025-25): 2.10% under 133%, rising to 9.96% from 300% to 400%.
- Line 8: your required contribution, income times that figure.
- Lines 11-24: each month's credit is the benchmark (SLCSP) premium minus your monthly contribution, but no more than the premium you paid.
- Lines 27-29: excess advance credit. For tax years after 2025 the repayment limits are removed, so you repay all of it.
Worked example
A two-person household with $50,000 of income is at 236% of the $21,150 poverty line, so its applicable figure is 7.94% and its required contribution is $3,970 a year. With a $10,800 benchmark premium, the allowed credit is $10,800 − $3,970 = $6,830. The insurer received $7,000 in advance, more than the allowed credit, so Line 29 shows $170 to repay, in full, since 2026 has no repayment cap. Had income been $90,000 (426% of the line), there'd be no credit at all and the full $7,000 would be repaid.
