What Form 1095-A shows

If you bought coverage through HealthCare.gov or a state marketplace, you get Form 1095-A by early February. Use it to fill in Form 8962 and reconcile your premium tax credit. Column A is the premium for your plan, Column B is the premium of the second-lowest-cost silver plan (SLCSP) that sets your credit, and Column C is the advance credit paid to your insurer.

2026 rules: the 400% limit and no repayment cap are back

The temporary 2021โ€“2025 expansion ended, so for 2026 the credit is available only with household income from 100% to 400% of the federal poverty line. For 2026 coverage that line is $15,650 for one person plus $5,500 for each additional person in the 48 contiguous states, so 400% is $62,600 for one and $128,600 for a family of four. Your expected contribution toward the SLCSP follows the 2026 applicable percentage table (Rev. Proc. 2025-25):

Household income (% of poverty line)FromTo
Under 133%2.10%2.10%
133% to under 150%3.14%4.19%
150% to under 200%4.19%6.60%
200% to under 250%6.60%8.44%
250% to under 300%8.44%9.96%
300% to 400%9.96%9.96%

Your credit is the SLCSP premium minus your contribution, capped at what you actually paid. And for tax years after 2025 the IRS says the limits on repaying excess advance credit are removed, so if your income ended up higher than you estimated you repay the full difference on Form 8962. Update your income with the marketplace during the year to avoid a surprise.
