How Virginia withholding is calculated (2026)
Virginia Tax's withholding formula annualizes your pay, subtracts a standard deduction of $8,750, $930 for each personal and dependent exemption on your Form VA-4, and $800 for each age-65-or-older or blind exemption, then applies four brackets: 2% on the first $3,000, 3% to $5,000, 5% to $17,000 and 5.75% above $17,000 ($720 plus 5.75% of the excess).
Example: $60,000 single with one exemption: $60,000 โ $8,750 โ $930 = $50,320 taxable; $720 + 5.75% ร $33,320 = $2,635.90 a year, or $101.38 every two weeks. With federal income tax ($5,020) and FICA ($4,590), take-home is $1,836.70 per paycheck ($47,754 a year).
Paycheck estimator Virginia: withholding vs. what you owe
The withholding formula uses the single standard deduction for everyone, while your return uses $17,500 if you're married filing jointly. That's why the calculator shows both your withholding and your estimated 2026 Virginia tax: a married couple filing jointly usually gets part of the difference back as a refund, or can claim extra exemptions on the VA-4.
Pay calculator Virginia, payroll calculator Virginia and salary calculator VA
All three searches come down to the same math: this page works as a pay calculator Virginia employees can use for one paycheck, a payroll calculator Virginia employers can check withholding against (it uses Virginia Tax's own formula), and a salary calculator VA job seekers can use to turn an offer into take-home pay. For hourly pay, multiply your hourly rate by your yearly hours (2,080 for 40 hours a week) and enter that as the salary.
Virginia's standard deduction drops in 2027
Under Virginia Code ยง 58.1-322.03 the higher deduction ($8,750 single, $17,500 joint) applies to taxable years 2025 and 2026 only; from January 1, 2027 it reverts to $3,000 and $6,000 unless the General Assembly extends it. On $60,000 that would add about $330 a year of Virginia tax for a single filer, so check your VA-4 and budget for 2027.
401(k) deferrals and pre-tax health premiums reduce Virginia wages the same way they reduce federal wages. For other states, use the state paycheck calculator.
