Taxable income calculator (2026)
How taxable income is calculated
- Gross income: wages, interest, business and other income.
- Adjusted gross income (AGI) = gross income โ pre-tax payroll deductions (traditional 401(k), HSA, health premiums) โ adjustments (deductible IRA, student loan interest, half of self-employment tax).
- Taxable income = AGI โ the larger of the standard deduction or itemized deductions โ the new senior deduction if you qualify.
Example: single, $85,000 salary, $6,000 to a 401(k): AGI $79,000, minus the $16,100 standard deduction = taxable income $62,900. Tax: 10% of $12,400 + 12% of $38,000 + 22% of $12,500 = $1,240 + $4,560 + $2,750 = $8,550, an effective rate of 10.8% of AGI in the 22% bracket.

2026 tax brackets married filing jointly
Joint brackets are exactly double the single brackets up to the 32% rate (10% to $24,800, 12% to $100,800, 22% to $211,400, 24% to $403,550, 32% to $512,450); the 35% bracket ends at $768,700 and 37% applies above that. The joint standard deduction is $32,200.
2026 standard deduction and the senior deduction
- Standard deduction: $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household.
- Extra for age 65+ or blind: $2,050 each (single or head of household), $1,650 per box (married).
- Senior deduction (2025โ2028): $6,000 per person 65 or older, reduced by 6% of modified AGI over $75,000 ($150,000 joint). You can take it whether or not you itemize; married filing separately can't.
Tax percentage calculator: marginal vs effective rate
Your marginal rate is the bracket your last dollar falls in; your effective rate is total tax รท income. Moving into a higher bracket only taxes the dollars above the threshold at the higher rate, so a raise never lowers your take-home pay because of brackets.
Calculating federal income tax: federal taxable income calculator and fed tax calculator
Calculating federal income tax takes two steps: find federal taxable income (the federal taxable income calculator above), then apply the brackets. As a fed tax calculator or tax amount calculator it shows the tax in each bracket; salary tax brackets are the same brackets, since wages are taxed as ordinary income.
