How Massachusetts takes tax out of your pay (2026)
Massachusetts taxes wages at a flat 5%, plus a 4% surtax on income above $1,107,750 for 2026 (Massachusetts Department of Revenue). Withholding subtracts an exemption of $4,400 if you claim one exemption on Form M-4 (otherwise $3,400 plus $1,000 per exemption) and up to $2,000 a year of Social Security and Medicare tax. Traditional 401(k) deferrals are excluded from Massachusetts income to the same extent as federal income; Roth 401(k) contributions are not.
Example: $75,000 single, one exemption: ($75,000 โ $2,000 โ $4,400) ร 5% = $3,430 of Massachusetts tax. Add federal income tax ($7,670), Social Security and Medicare ($5,738) and PFML ($345) and take-home is $57,818 a year, $2,223.75 every two weeks.
Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) in your paycheck
For 2026 the PFML contribution is 0.88% of wages up to the Social Security wage base ($184,500) at employers with 25 or more workers: 0.70% for medical leave and 0.18% for family leave. Employers must pay at least 60% of the medical part, so the most an employee can be charged is 0.46% (0.28% medical + 0.18% family). Some employers pay more of it; check your pay stub and lower the PFML box if yours does.
The millionaire's tax: 4% surtax
The surtax applies only to income above the threshold. On a $1.5 million salary the Massachusetts withholding estimate is about $90,114: 5% on everything after the exemption and FICA deduction plus 4% on the part above $1,107,750.
