What Form 1095-B is
Insurers, Medicaid and CHIP agencies and some employers send Form 1095-B to show the months you and your family had minimum essential coverage. Part IV lists the people covered and the months.
Do you need Form 1095-B to file?
No. The federal individual shared responsibility payment has been $0 since 2019, and you don't need to wait for a 1095-B or attach it to Form 1040. Keep it with your records. Many providers now send it only on request.
States that still have a mandate
California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia have their own individual mandates with penalties for uncovered months, generally with an exemption for a short gap in coverage. Residents report coverage on their state return, where a 1095-B is useful proof. Vermont has a mandate with no penalty. Bought coverage on the marketplace? You get Form 1095-A instead.
