Form 8949 and Schedule D calculator
What Form 8949 is for
Form 8949 lists each sale of stock, funds, crypto and other capital assets; its totals go to Schedule D. Brokers send Form 1099-B, and from 2025 digital asset brokers send Form 1099-DA. Each transaction goes in the part and box that matches its holding period and how it was reported (IRS instructions, 2025):
- Part I, short-term (held 1 year or less): Box A (basis reported to the IRS), B (basis not reported), C (no 1099). Digital assets use the new Boxes G, H and I.
- Part II, long-term (more than 1 year): Box D, E, F, and J, K, L for digital assets.
- If all your sales are Box A or D with no adjustments, you can skip Form 8949 and put the totals straight on Schedule D lines 1a and 8a.
Columns and wash sales
Gain or loss (column h) = proceeds (d) − cost basis (e) + adjustment (g). A wash sale (buying the same or a substantially identical security within 30 days before or after a loss sale) disallows the loss: enter code W in column (f) and add the disallowed loss back in column (g). It's added to the basis of the new shares instead.
The $3,000 loss limit and worked example
Net capital losses offset other income up to $3,000 a year ($1,500 married filing separately); the rest carries forward with no time limit. Example: a short-term sale for $20,000 with $26,000 of basis is a $6,000 loss, but $1,000 is a wash sale, so the allowed loss is $5,000. A long-term $3,000 gain nets it to a $2,000 loss, all deductible this year. Tax on gains: capital gains tax calculator; strategy: tax loss harvesting; your broker's form: 1099 B.
