How can you tell if a cash ISA provider is safe?

Check three things before moving cash: who legally holds the deposit, whether the provider is properly authorised, and whether the money is covered by the right FSCS protection. Then compare the ISA rate, access rules and transfer terms rather than choosing on branding alone.

Check your prospective provider in the FCA register and confirm its deposit protection with FSCS before transferring money.

Check the FCA Financial Services Register

Run your own numbers: Compound interest and savings calculator.

A savings brand can be different from the bank that actually holds your money. The first job is to identify the authorised firm behind the product. FSCS says deposit protection applies to eligible deposits at UK-authorised banks, building societies and credit unions, and its protection checker shows firms linked to the same banking authorisation.

This matters when you see several brands advertising similar accounts. Two brands may ultimately place deposits with the same authorised bank, so you cannot assume the protection limit resets simply because the logos are different.

Check authorisation and permissions

The FCA says nearly all financial-service activities must be authorised or registered, but a search alone does not prove that every product on offer is covered. Use the Financial Services Register or Firm Checker and check the firm's legal name, status and the activities it has permission to undertake.

The FCA also warns about clone firms. A scammer can copy the identity of a genuine business but give you a different phone number, email address or website. Always obtain contact details independently and compare them with the regulator's record.

Confirm the type of FSCS protection

For eligible cash deposits, the FSCS limit is currently £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm. It is a protection against firm failure, not against every possible investment loss. Investment products can have different protection rules, so an account called “cash-like” does not automatically mean it is a protected bank deposit.

If the provider uses a panel of banks, ask how the money is allocated and whether balances held elsewhere with those same banks count toward your limit. FSCS provides a bank-and-savings protection checker for this reason.

Check the ISA wrapper separately

A Cash ISA is a tax wrapper around qualifying cash savings. For 2026/27 the overall ISA subscription limit is £20,000. From 6 April 2027, the Cash ISA subscription limit will be £12,000 for individuals under 65, while the overall ISA limit remains £20,000.

Those allowance rules do not tell you whether one provider is safe. They are a separate question from authorisation and protection. Treat the tax wrapper, product rate and provider safety as three separate checks.

Do not choose on rate alone

A good rate is useful only if the account works for your circumstances. Check whether it is variable or fixed, whether there are withdrawal limits, whether notice is required, whether there are penalties, and how easy it is to transfer out later.

Also check what happens when an introductory rate ends. A temporary rate can be competitive while the account's long-term rate is ordinary. Set a reminder to review the account before that point.

Use the formal ISA transfer process

When moving an existing ISA, ask the new provider to initiate the transfer. GOV.UK explains that transferring rather than withdrawing preserves the ISA structure. Do not turn a £20,000 ISA into ordinary bank cash merely to make the move feel simpler.

Red flags worth stopping for

  • The provider cannot clearly identify the authorised firm.
  • The protection statement is vague or refers only to being “regulated” without saying what is protected.
  • The contact details do not match the regulator's record.
  • You are pressured to transfer quickly or to use an unusual payment route.
  • The advertised rate has complicated conditions that you cannot explain back in plain English.

FCA guidance says using an authorised firm with the correct permissions greatly reduces risk, but it does not remove all risk. The final product terms still matter.

A five-minute safety check

Record the provider name, legal entity, FCA/PRA status, underlying deposit taker, FSCS category, interest rate, access rules and transfer procedure. If you cannot fill those in from reliable sources, do not transfer money until you can.

Illustrative balance versus standard FSCS deposit limit
FSCS limit£120,000Illustrative balance£150,000Above limit£30,000

Worked example

Illustrative protection check: suppose a saver wants to place £150,000 in a Cash ISA and discovers that the deposits are all with one authorised bank. The FSCS deposit limit is £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm.

  • Illustrative balance: £150,000.
  • Illustrative protected amount: £120,000.
  • Amount above the standard limit: £150,000 − £120,000 = £30,000.

The £30,000 is not automatically lost if the bank fails, but it is outside the standard deposit-protection limit. The saver could therefore check whether the provider uses another authorised bank or split cash across genuinely separate banking licences. The correct answer depends on the actual firms holding the money.

The calculation only compares balances at one point in time. A real ISA comparison should also consider the transfer process, whether interest continues during the move, access restrictions, withdrawal conditions and the protection arrangements of the institution actually holding the cash.

Is every Cash ISA covered by FSCS?#

A qualifying Cash ISA based on an eligible bank, building society or credit-union deposit can have FSCS deposit protection, but the product structure matters. FSCS protection does not simply apply to every account described as a savings product. Check the underlying authorised firm and the protection category.

How do I check a Cash ISA provider is regulated?#

Use the FCA Financial Services Register or Firm Checker and verify the legal entity and permissions. For the deposit itself, use the FSCS protection checker as well. The two checks answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Does £120,000 FSCS protection apply per account?#

No. For eligible deposits it is generally £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm. If two brands share the same banking licence, the balances can be aggregated for the protection calculation rather than receiving a separate £120,000 limit for each brand.

Can I move an ISA to a provider I have never used before?#

Yes, but do the safety checks first. Confirm the provider, underlying deposit taker, FSCS status, account conditions and transfer process. Then use the formal ISA transfer route rather than withdrawing the old ISA to your current account. A higher rate is only useful if the terms and protection also suit you.

What are the main red flags with a Cash ISA?#

Unclear legal ownership, pressure to transfer quickly, inconsistent contact details, vague protection statements and complicated withdrawal conditions are reasons to pause. The FCA also warns that clone firms can copy legitimate businesses, so independently verify who you are dealing with.

Is the ISA allowance the same as FSCS protection?#

No. The ISA allowance controls how much new ISA money you can subscribe under the tax rules. FSCS protection is about compensation if an eligible authorised firm fails. A £20,000 ISA balance can still be subject to the provider and protection rules separately.

What should I compare besides the Cash ISA interest rate?#

Compare access, notice or withdrawal conditions, fixed versus variable rates, bonus expiry, transfer procedures, provider reputation and FSCS structure. The best rate on paper can be a poor fit if you need immediate access or if the conditions are easy to breach.
