How do I transfer money between Indian bank accounts?
For a domestic Indian transfer, you can use a bank-supported ATM or digital channel such as IMPS or NEFT. For transfers from the US, keep a clear source-of-funds trail and treat tax and foreign-account reporting as separate questions.

Check NPCI's current IMPS information and your bank's transfer limits before making a large account-to-account payment.
Check NPCI IMPS guidanceCan you transfer money from one Indian account to another using an ATM?
It depends on the bank and ATM network, but the normal modern answer is that you can use an ATM for certain transfer services and you can also use digital banking. NPCI says IMPS is available 24×7 and can be initiated through mobile, internet and ATM channels, subject to your bank's available service and limits.
For an ATM-based transfer, the machine may ask you to choose a funds-transfer option, identify the destination account and authenticate the transaction. The exact screens and limits are bank-specific, so use your bank's own instructions rather than assuming every ATM works the same way.
What is IMPS?
IMPS is an instant bank-transfer service operated through the Indian payments ecosystem. NPCI says it is available round the clock and can be initiated through ATM, mobile and internet channels. NPCI currently lists a per-transaction IMPS limit of ₹5 lakh for channels other than SMS and IVR, while noting that customers should check with their bank for applicable details.
That means a transfer of ₹50,000 is comfortably below that stated IMPS ceiling, although your bank may impose its own transaction or channel limits.
What about NEFT and RTGS?
RBI describes NEFT, RTGS and IMPS as major retail remittance channels. For ordinary account-to-account transfers, the best choice often depends on speed, amount, availability and what your bank supports. You do not need to force every transfer through an ATM; online banking may be simpler and easier to verify before you confirm.
Always double-check the beneficiary account number. RBI guidance emphasises the importance of correct account information in electronic transfers. A mistaken account number can result in money being credited to the wrong destination, creating a recovery problem.
How do I send money from the US to India?
A cross-border transfer is different from an Indian domestic ATM transfer. Common routes include a bank wire, a regulated money-transfer provider or a bank's inward-remittance service. The recipient normally needs a suitable Indian bank account and the sender needs accurate beneficiary details and the purpose of the remittance.
Do not confuse sending your own money between accounts with making a taxable payment to another person. The tax consequences can depend on whether the money is a gift, income, repayment, investment proceeds or something else.
Will transferring your own money from the US to India create Indian income tax?
A transfer of your own already-owned money is not automatically the same thing as new income simply because the money crosses a border. Tax depends on the nature of the underlying money, residency, the source of the funds and any applicable tax rules. Keep the bank trail showing where the funds came from.
For payments made to non-residents from India, the Income Tax Department has separate remittance-reporting rules and forms. Those rules concern foreign remittances and taxability of payments to non-residents; they should not be confused with a simple inward transfer of your own funds into an Indian account.
How many dollars can I transfer to India without telling the IRS?
There is no simple “safe transfer amount” that means the IRS will never see or care about a US taxpayer's foreign accounts. The IRS says a US person generally must file an FBAR when the aggregate value of qualifying foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year. That is an account-reporting rule, not a rule that makes a particular transfer taxable.
US citizens and resident aliens abroad are also generally taxed on worldwide income. The key is to distinguish a transfer of capital from taxable income and to comply with the reporting rules that apply to the accounts involved.
How can I make a transfer safely?
- Use the bank's official app, website or ATM.
- Check the beneficiary account number character by character.
- Save the transaction reference.
- Do not send an OTP or PIN to another person.
- For international transfers, verify exchange rate, fees and beneficiary details before confirming.
RBI's retail-remittance material describes multiple formal channels, while NPCI's IMPS guidance confirms ATM support. There is rarely a good reason to hand your debit card or online-banking credentials to another person merely because they say they will “make the transfer for you”.
What records should I keep?
Keep the transfer confirmation, bank statement, purpose of payment, exchange-rate information for international transfers and any documents showing the source of funds. For US taxpayers, keep records that support foreign-account reporting and any foreign income or tax-credit position.
For India-bound transfers, the bank may request purpose-of-remittance or KYC information. Respond through the bank's official channel and keep copies of the documents you submit.
Worked example
Illustrative India transfer: A customer wants to move ₹80,000 from one Indian bank account to another. The bank supports IMPS and the customer uses an ATM-enabled transfer channel. The amount is below NPCI's stated ₹5 lakh per-transaction IMPS limit for supported channels, although the customer's own bank can apply a lower limit.
Separately, suppose a US taxpayer transfers $6,000 of their own savings to an Indian account they already hold. The transfer itself is not the same as earning $6,000 of new income. The taxpayer should still consider the foreign-account reporting rules if the aggregate value of qualifying foreign accounts exceeds the relevant threshold during the year. The example does not say the transfer is taxable or tax-free in every situation; the underlying source, ownership and account status are what determine the relevant reporting and tax questions.
Can I transfer money between bank accounts at an ATM in India?#
Some banks support account transfers through their ATMs, and NPCI says IMPS can be initiated through ATM channels. The exact menu, beneficiary setup and limit depend on your bank. Online or mobile banking may be simpler, but an ATM can be a supported channel where the bank offers the service.
What is the IMPS limit in India?#
NPCI currently states that the per-transaction IMPS limit is ₹5 lakh for all channels except SMS and IVR. Your bank can impose its own limits or additional conditions, so check the bank's current rules before planning a large transfer. Do not assume every account has the same practical ceiling.
Is sending money from the US to my Indian account taxable?#
Moving your own money is not automatically the same as earning new taxable income. The tax answer depends on the source and ownership of the money, your tax residence and any account-reporting obligations. Keep a clear bank trail showing that the transfer is a movement of your own funds where that is the case.
How much can I transfer to India without the IRS knowing?#
There is no magic transfer amount that makes foreign-account obligations disappear. The IRS says an FBAR is generally required when qualifying foreign financial accounts exceed $10,000 in aggregate at any time during the calendar year. That reporting threshold is separate from whether a particular transfer represents taxable income.
Do I pay tax in India when I receive money from my US bank account?#
A transfer of your own money into another account is not automatically new income. The underlying source matters: salary, investment proceeds, a gift, sale proceeds and repayment can have different treatment. Keep source documents and bank records, and obtain India-specific tax advice for unusual or substantial receipts.
Is NEFT better than IMPS for transferring money in India?#
Neither is universally better. IMPS is designed for instant transfers and is available round the clock, while other bank-transfer channels may suit different amounts and purposes. Compare the speed, limits, fees and beneficiary details supported by your bank and choose the channel that fits the transaction.
