Military clock conversion: the rules
- Morning (midnight to 12:59 PM): write the hour with a leading zero and drop the colon. 7:45 AM = 0745. Midnight is 0000; 12:30 PM is 1230.
- Afternoon and evening (1:00 PM to 11:59 PM): add 12 to the hour. 2:30 PM = 1430; 11:15 PM = 2315.
- Back to standard time: if the first two digits are 13 or more, subtract 12 and add PM. 1900 = 7:00 PM. 0000 to 1159 is AM.
- How to say it: 0800 is "zero eight hundred hours"; 1430 is "fourteen thirty hours"; 0005 is "zero zero zero five". The word "hours" is often dropped.
Some schedules use 2400 for midnight at the end of a day (a shift ending at 2400) and 0000 for the start of the next. Military time zones are lettered: Z (Zulu) = UTC, and US Eastern Standard Time is R (Romeo) time.
