How Maine's vehicle excise tax works
Maine charges an annual excise tax on cars and trucks, paid to your town or city before you register with the BMV. It's based on the vehicle's original MSRP (the manufacturer's suggested retail price, not what you paid or what it's worth now), times a mill rate that falls as the vehicle ages (Maine Revenue Services). The rates drop each January 1.

Year 1 is the current model year; each earlier model year moves down one step. A mill is $1 per $1,000, so 24 mills is 2.4%.
Worked example
A new 2026 model with a $35,000 sticker price pays $840.00 in excise when first registered in 2026, then $612.50 in 2027 and $472.50 in 2028. From year 6 it's $140.00 a year.
