What Form 4547 is

Form 4547, Trump Account Election(s), is how a parent or guardian opens a Trump account for a child and signs up for the $1,000 federal pilot deposit. You can file it with your tax return or use the online election at trumpaccounts.gov. A Trump account is a new kind of IRA for children created by the 2025 tax law (IRC 530A).

The rules (IRS)

Worked example

A child born in 2026 gets the $1,000 deposit, and the family adds $1,000 a year for 18 years. At a 7% yearly return the account grows to about $37,379 by 18, from $19,000 put in. Family contributions aren't deductible, so they become after-tax basis; growth is taxed when withdrawn under IRA rules. Compare with a 529 plan for college or a custodial Roth IRA once the child has earnings.
