Who files Form 2290

Form 2290 reports the federal heavy highway vehicle use tax (HVUT) on trucks and tractors with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are used on public highways. The tax period runs July 1 to June 30; the current form covers July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. Taxable gross weight is the unloaded truck plus the heaviest trailer and load it customarily carries. You need the stamped Schedule 1 to register or renew plates, and filers reporting 25 or more vehicles must e-file.

2026-2027 rates

Category A (55,000 lbs) is $100; each extra 1,000 pounds or fraction adds $22, up to $540 for Category U (74,001-75,000 lbs). Anything over 75,000 lbs, including a typical 80,000-lb tractor-trailer, is Category V at $550. Logging vehicles pay 75% of these rates ($412.50 for Category V).

Taxable gross weightAnnual taxLogging
55,000 lbs$100.00$75.00
60,000 lbs$210.00$157.50
65,000 lbs$320.00$240.00

75,000 lbs$540.00$405.00
80,000 lbs$550.00$412.50

First used after July, and suspended vehicles

A vehicle first used after July pays a partial-period tax for the months left in the period, due by the end of the month after the first-use month. Example: an 80,000-lb truck first used in October pays 9/12 of $550 = $412.50, due November 30, 2026. A vehicle expected to run 5,000 miles or less on public highways (7,500 for farm vehicles) is suspended as Category W: you still file Form 2290, but owe no tax unless it goes over the limit. Business owners deducting truck costs can also check the IRS mileage rate and the self-employment tax estimator.
