What Form 4868 does, and doesn't do

Form 4868 gives individuals an automatic 6-month extension to file Form 1040, to October 15 (for 2026 returns, October 15, 2027). You don't need a reason, and paying any part of your expected balance electronically and marking it as an extension payment also counts as filing the extension. But it is not an extension to pay: tax not paid by April 15 runs up penalties and interest from that date.

The three costs of paying late

Worked example

You expect $12,000 of tax and $9,000 was withheld. That's 75% of the tax, under the 90% safe level, so the $3,000 balance draws the failure-to-pay penalty. Paying it 4 months late costs $60 in penalty and about $71 of interest, around $131 in all, as long as you file by October 15. Sending $1,800 with the extension gets you to 90% and removes the penalty. See also tax extension rules, IRS payment plans and the tax refund estimator.
