How to calculate the grade you need on a final
Required score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. If you have an 85% going in, the final is worth 20%, and you want a 90%: (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = (90 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 110%, which isn't reachable. For a B (83%) you'd need (83 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 75%.
"Current grade" means your grade in everything except the final, as your gradebook shows it. If your school counts the final as a set number of points rather than a percentage, divide the final's points by the course's total points to get its weight.
Exam calculator and final calculator: weighted grades
A weighted grade multiplies each category's average by its weight and divides by the total weight entered. Homework 92% (20%), quizzes 85% (15%), midterm 81% (25%) and project 95% (15%) give (18.4 + 12.75 + 20.25 + 14.25) ÷ 75% = 87.53% so far, with 25% of the course (the final) still to come.
Test calculator: percent from questions wrong
Score = (questions − wrong) ÷ questions × 100. On a 25-question test, each question is worth 4 points; 3 wrong is 88%. The letter scale shown (93+ A, 90 A−, 87 B+...) is the most common US scale; your syllabus may differ.
Common questions
What do I need on my final to pass?
Use the formula with your passing grade as the target: (60 − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With a 65% and a 30% final, you need at least 48.3%.
How do I calculate my final grade?
Course grade = current grade × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight.
How much is a final exam worth?
Usually 15% to 40% of the course grade; check your syllabus.
What is 22 out of 25 as a percentage?
88% (22 ÷ 25 × 100).
Can I still get an A?
Enter 90 (or 93) as the target. If the required score is over 100%, an A isn't possible without extra credit.
