Common questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply. 15% of 240 = 0.15 × 240 = 36.

How do I work out what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. 36 out of 240 = 36 ÷ 240 × 100 = 15%.

How do I find the original number before a percentage?

Divide by the percentage as a decimal. If 36 is 15% of a number, the number is 36 ÷ 0.15 = 240.

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

What's the difference between percent change and percent difference?

Percent change measures a move from an old value to a new one. Percent difference compares two values on equal terms, dividing by their average.
