How to calculate a discount

Sale price = original price ร— (1 โˆ’ discount รท 100). $80 at 25% off is $80 ร— 0.75 = $60, a $20 saving. Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: an extra 10% off the $60 sale price is $54, which is 32.5% off in total, not 35%. Sales tax is charged on the discounted price in most states: $54 plus 8% tax is $58.32. (Manufacturer coupons can be taxed on the pre-coupon price in some states.)

Percent off calculator

To find the discount from two prices: percent off = (original โˆ’ sale) รท original ร— 100. A $120 jacket on sale for $84 is $36 off, or 30% off. For other percentage math (percent of, increase, change), see the percentage calculator.

Tip calculator: how much to tip

Tip = bill ร— tip % รท 100. A 20% tip on an $86.40 bill is $17.28, making $103.68, or $34.56 each for three people. Quick mental math: move the decimal one place for 10% ($8.64) and double it for 20%. In the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for sit-down restaurant service, with 20% common today; many people tip on the pre-tax amount, so enter the bill before tax if you prefer.
