How to convert a decimal to a fraction

  1. Write the decimal over 1 followed by as many zeros as it has decimal places: 0.375 = 375/1000.
  2. Divide top and bottom by their greatest common factor (125): 3/8.
  3. For a number above 1, the whole part becomes the mixed number's whole part: 2.75 = 275/100 = 11/4 = 2 3/4.

Repeating decimals: 0.333โ€ฆ = 1/3 and 0.1666โ€ฆ = 1/6. To convert 0.(3) by hand, let x = 0.333โ€ฆ, so 10x = 3.333โ€ฆ; subtract to get 9x = 3, x = 1/3. Type repeating digits in brackets above, e.g. 0.(142857) = 1/7. If you only have a rounded decimal like 3.14159, the closest simple fraction with a denominator up to 1,000 is 355/113.

To add mixed numbers, convert to improper fractions, use a common denominator, then convert back: 1 1/2 + 2 2/3 = 3/2 + 8/3 = 9/6 + 16/6 = 25/6 = 4 1/6. To multiply, multiply tops and bottoms (1 1/2 ร— 2 2/3 = 3/2 ร— 8/3 = 4); to divide, flip the second fraction and multiply. The fraction calculator above does all four and simplifies the answer.

Decimal calculator without rounding errors

Computers store most decimals in binary, which is why some calculators show 0.1 + 0.2 = 0.30000000000000004. This decimal calculator works with exact fractions, so 0.1 + 0.2 = 0.3, and division shows the repeating part: 5/12 = 0.41(6).
