How to calculate cubic yards
Multiply length × width × depth, all in feet, to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 (a cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 cu ft). A 12 × 10 ft area 4 inches deep is 12 × 10 × 0.333 = 40 cu ft = 1.48 cubic yards.
- Circles: area = π × diameter² ÷ 4. Triangles: base × height ÷ 2. Borders or rings (around a tree or pool): outer circle minus inner circle.
- Weight: material weights are typical figures and vary with moisture and type; your supplier's weight per yard is the one to use for loads and pricing.
