CAGR Calculator
Enter a starting value, an ending value and the time between them, in years or exact dates, to get the compound annual growth rate with the CAGR formula worked through. You can also grow a value at a set CAGR, find the CAGR you need for a goal, and get an XIRR-style return when you added money along the way.

CAGR needed to reach a goal
Annual return with deposits on different dates (XIRR)
CAGR assumes one deposit at the start. If you added money along the way, enter each deposit as a negative number and today's value as a positive one to get your money-weighted annual return.

CAGR formula
CAGR = (ending value รท beginning value)1 รท years โ 1. $10,000 that grew to $19,500 over 7 years: (19,500 รท 10,000)1/7 โ 1 = 10.010% a year. That's the steady yearly rate that would turn the start value into the end value, ignoring the ups and downs in between.
Excel or Google Sheets: =(B2/A2)^(1/C2)-1, or =RRI(years, start, end).
CAGR vs average return: +50% one year and โ50% the next averages 0%, but $100 becomes $75, a CAGR of โ13.4%. CAGR shows what really happened to the money.
Common questions
How do I calculate CAGR?
Divide the ending value by the beginning value, raise it to 1 รท the number of years and subtract 1. $10,000 to $19,500 in 7 years is 10.01% a year.
What is a good CAGR?
It depends on the asset. Compare it with a benchmark for the same period, such as a broad stock index fund for stocks.
Can CAGR be negative?
Yes. If the ending value is below the starting value, CAGR is negative.
What's the difference between CAGR and XIRR?
CAGR uses only a start and end value. XIRR also accounts for money added or withdrawn on specific dates, so it's the right measure for a portfolio with regular deposits.
How do I calculate CAGR in Excel?
Use =(End/Start)^(1/Years)-1 or =RRI(Years, Start, End).
