How the projection works

Growth is applied monthly at the expected annual return (compounded monthly). Contributions are added each month and increased once a year by the percentage you choose. “In today's dollars” divides the balance by (1 + inflation)years. Real investments go up and down; a steady average return is a simplification.

Common questions

What return should I assume?

Many people test several rates. US stocks have historically averaged roughly 10% a year before inflation over long periods, with large swings; bonds and cash much less. Past returns do not guarantee future results.

Why adjust for inflation?

Prices rise over time, so a future balance buys less than the same number of dollars today.

Does this include taxes and fees?

No. Fees and taxes reduce real-world results; use a lower return to allow for them.
