Supplemental security income: who qualifies
SSI is a federal, needs-based monthly payment for people who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled and have limited income and resources: generally no more than $2,000 in countable resources for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. It's separate from Social Security retirement and disability benefits, which are based on work history.
2026 SSI payment and how income reduces it
The 2026 federal benefit rate is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple (after the 2.8% COLA). SSA subtracts your countable income: it ignores the first $20 of most income, then the first $65 of earnings and half of the rest. Example: $400 a month of wages and no other income: ($400 − $20 − $65) ÷ 2 = $157.50 counts, so SSI is about $836. Many states add a supplement.
