FDIC insured amount calculator (one bank)
FDIC insured amount: $250,000 per category
The FDIC insures deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Checking, savings, money market deposit accounts and CDs count; stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, crypto and safe-deposit box contents don't, even if bought at a bank.
- Single accounts: $250,000 per owner, all single accounts at that bank combined.
- Joint accounts: $250,000 per co-owner, so $500,000 for a couple.
- Certain retirement accounts such as IRAs: $250,000 per owner.
- Trust accounts (including POD/ITF, revocable and irrevocable): owners × beneficiaries × $250,000, but no more than $1,250,000 per owner (five beneficiaries) for all trust accounts at the bank, under rules effective April 1, 2024.
Over the limit? Spread money across banks or ownership categories. A couple with a joint account and trust accounts naming three children each can insure well over $2 million at one bank. Safe cash still earns: compare rates with the CD calculator.
