Net worth by age in the US (2025)
From the Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, released in October 2026, by age of the head of the family:
| Age | Median net worth | Average (mean) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 35 | $33,000 | $135,400 |
| 35–44 | $155,600 | $681,900 |
| 45–54 | $253,700 | $1,244,500 |
| 55–64 | $411,900 | $1,878,000 |
| 65–74 | $431,300 | $1,897,600 |
| 75 and older | $504,900 | $1,962,200 |
| All families | $215,900 | $1,241,500 |
The median is the middle family: half have more, half less. The average is much higher because a small number of very wealthy families pull it up, so the median is the better comparison for most people.
How to calculate net worth
Net worth = everything you own − everything you owe. Use current market values: what your home and car would sell for, and account balances today. Retirement accounts count at their full balance here, though withdrawals may be taxed. Liquid net worth leaves out your home, vehicles and retirement accounts to show what you could reach quickly.
