When to file an amended tax return
File Form 1040-X to fix income, deductions, credits or filing status on a return you already filed. You don't need to amend for math errors (the IRS corrects them) or a missing form it asks you for. You can e-file Form 1040-X for recent years in most tax software.
The deadline for a refund
Generally you must file a claim for refund within 3 years of the date you filed the original return (a return filed early is treated as filed on the due date) or within 2 years of paying the tax, whichever is later. Miss it and the refund is lost. If you owe more, file and pay as soon as possible to limit interest and penalties.
Track it with the IRS "Where's My Amended Return?" tool; amended returns take much longer to process than original returns.
