What perfusionists do

Perfusionists run the heart-lung machine during open-heart surgery and manage ECMO and other circulatory support. Most enter through a master's degree in perfusion and become certified clinical perfusionists (CCP) through the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. On-call work for emergency surgery is common, and call pay can add to base salary.
