Refinance car loan: when it pays
Refinancing replaces your auto loan with a new one, ideally at a lower rate. It's worth checking when rates have fallen, your credit score has improved since you bought, or you took dealer financing at a high rate. $22,000 with 54 months left at 11% costs $518.35 a month; refinanced at 6.5% for the same 54 months (with $150 of fees rolled in) it's $474.20, saving about $2,384.
Keep the same or a shorter term: stretching the term lowers the payment but can raise total interest. Lenders often limit refinancing by the car's age, mileage and loan-to-value; check for a lien-release or title fee in your state.
Refi car payment calculator: what to compare
- New payment vs current payment.
- Total of remaining payments, old vs new, including fees.
- Whether you'd lose add-ons (GAP, extended warranty) financed in the old loan; these may be refundable.
Car lease calculator: how a lease payment works
A lease payment has two parts: depreciation = (adjusted cap cost โ residual value) รท months, and the rent charge = (adjusted cap cost + residual value) ร money factor. Sales tax is usually charged on each payment. The money factor ร 2,400 is roughly the equivalent APR: 0.0025 โ 6%.
Example: MSRP $40,000, price $38,000, $2,000 down, $695 acquisition fee, 58% residual ($23,200), money factor 0.0025, 36 months: depreciation $374.86 + rent charge $149.74 = $524.60 base, $557.39 with 6.25% tax.
Negotiate the cap cost like a purchase price, ask for the buy-rate money factor, and compare the total lease cost against buying with the car payment calculator.

Common questions
Should I refinance my car loan?
Yes if you can get a meaningfully lower rate without a longer term or high fees; the calculator shows the total saved.
How is a car lease payment calculated?
(Cap cost โ residual) รท months + (cap cost + residual) ร money factor, plus tax.
What is a money factor?
The lease interest rate in decimal form; multiply by 2,400 to approximate the APR.
Does refinancing a car hurt credit?
A hard inquiry causes a small temporary dip; on-time payments rebuild it.
What is a good residual value?
Higher is better for the lessee: 55% to 65% on a 36-month lease is common.
