Body type calculator: how body shape is classified
The shapes use the bust, waist and hip differences from the FFIT body-shape method developed for apparel sizing (Simmons, Istook and Devarajan): hourglass (bust and hips within about an inch, waist 9+ inches smaller), top hourglass (bust larger), bottom hourglass (hips larger), triangle / pear (hips 3.6+ inches larger than bust), inverted triangle (bust 3.6+ inches larger than hips) and rectangle (all three close). 36-27-37 is an hourglass. It's a fit and style guide, not a health measure; for health, the waist-to-hip ratio matters more (WHO: above 0.90 for men or 0.85 for women indicates higher risk).
Body surface area calculator (BSA)
Mosteller: BSA = √(height cm × weight kg ÷ 3,600). Du Bois: 0.007184 × weight0.425 × height0.725. A 70 in (177.8 cm), 176.4 lb (80 kg) adult is about 1.99 m² by Mosteller (1.98 by Du Bois). This BSA calculator shows both. BSA is used to dose chemotherapy and some other drugs and to index cardiac output; clinical dosing should follow the prescriber's protocol.
Ideal body weight calculator
Four published formulas, each adding a fixed amount per inch over 5 feet: Devine (men 50 kg + 2.3 kg/in, women 45.5 kg + 2.3), Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. For a 5'10" man they range from about 155 to 165 lb. Devine is the one used clinically for drug dosing; the healthy-BMI range (18.5–24.9) is a broader ideal weight calculator view.
Weight loss calculator: percentage lost
Weight loss percentage = (starting − current) ÷ starting × 100. 200 lb to 184 lb is 8%. Losing 5% to 10% of body weight improves blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol for many people (NIH). For calories, use the calorie deficit calculator; this weight calculator tracks progress.
