Student loan interest deduction 2026

You can deduct up to $2,500 of interest paid on qualified student loans as an adjustment to income, so you don't need to itemize. For 2026 the deduction phases out between $85,000 and $100,000 of modified AGI, or $175,000 and $205,000 for joint filers (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). Married filing separately can't claim it, and neither can someone claimed as a dependent.

Example: $3,000 of interest with $90,000 of MAGI (single): the deduction is cut to $1,667. Lenders send Form 1098-E if you paid $600 or more of interest; you can deduct smaller amounts too.
